Bethany Younge - Piano, Compostion, Theory
Bethany "The Philosopher"
Through teaching, performing, and composing music, I have come to recognize how personal and intimate music can be. Musicians often vary greatly in their learning styles, musical preferences, and musical understanding. With this in mind, it is exceedingly important for me, as a teacher, to be open and willing to explore the various ways in which a student’s specific musical needs can be met. I strive to make my lessons inspiring, motivating, and fun for any learner.
Bethany "The Composer"
Bethany Younge has received a Masters degree in Composition from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in The Netherlands and a Bachelors degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Composition (along with a minor in TIMARA-Technology in Music And Related Arts). She has studied composition closely with Richard Barrett, Martijn Padding, Yannis Kyriakides, Peter Adriaansz, Lewis Nielson, and Seung-Ah Oh and attended master classes conducted by esteemed composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, David Lang, Rebecca Saunders, Richard Ayers, Helena Tulve, Gordon Mumma, Rand Steiger, Trevor Wishart, Kiaja Saariaho, and Chaya Czernowin.
Bethany is a composer of both acoustic and electroacoustic works. She has collaborated with video artists, poets, and sculptors. Her work focuses primarily on spoken text in combination with acoustic and electronic sound. Her acoustic works most often seek to mimic both speech and sound poetry. She has been selected to attend many workshops and festivals (Labo Montreal, Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium, CNMF, Gaudeamus, SCIPP, The 16th International Young Composers Meeting, SoundSCAPE, and more) and has had her work performed by many professional ensembles. During Bethany’s artistic residency in Iceland, she composed for the Icelandic Flute Ensemble. Her work has been performed in Israel, Europe and the USA in a variety of different venues including concert halls, gallery spaces, theaters and more.
Bethany "The Teacher"
Bethany has taught composition and piano throughout the USA, The Netherlands, and Iceland.
In Bethany’s piano lessons, she teaches her students how to read music, use proper technique for playing, and understand basic music theory. She encourages her students to dabble in improvisation so that her student can gain a deeper connection and comfort with the instrument on their own terms.
She also teaches students whose interests are in song-writing, music theory, formal composition, instrumentation, or learning proper notation (handwritten or with computer).
